The IEEE Haptics Symposium seeks high-quality, original submissions in all areas of haptics including, but not limited to:
- Psychophysics and perception
- Biomechanics and motor control
- Haptic interactions and their design
- Haptic device design and dynamics
- Haptic rendering and modeling
- Control system design and analysis
- Systems and networks involving haptic interactions
- Application of the above, including areas such as education, rehabilitation, medicine, computer-aided design, skills training, computer games, driver controls, simulation and visualization
Full Papers
Full papers are up to 8 pages in length and are peer reviewed. All accepted full papers will appear in the IEEE Proceedings. The co-chairs will accept full papers for either oral or poster presentation; authors may indicate their preference.
Extended Abstracts
Extended abstracts are up to 4 pages in length and are peer-reviewed on the same schedule as full papers. All accepted extended abstracts will appear in the IEEE proceedings.
New in 2010: a subset of extended abstracts (fewer than full papers) will be selected for oral presentation , and the remainder will be accepted for poster presentations. Authors may indicate their preference for oral or poster presentation.
We anticipate two primary sources of interest in this revised category:
- Submissions describing contributions on the scale of a full paper, albeit in less detail. These authors would like to share this work at the Symposium, but disciplinary constraints prevent its release for conference publication (2-4 published pages do not bar publication in prominent journals which have been the source of this difficulty).
- Submissions that are smaller in scope than a full paper, yet of immediate interest to the Symposium audience: e.g. preliminary studies, prototype applications or initial implementations.
The intent of the new oral-presentation policy for extended abstracts is to safeguard the diversity of our conference by attracting exciting and cutting-edge representation in our oral sessions from parts of our audience who have difficulties with conference-publication conventions. This path to oral presentation will be subjected to the same standard of interest, innovativeness and impact as is applied to full-paper submissions.
Demonstrations
The Symposium strongly encourages demonstrations of all kinds - for example, of novel developments in haptics-related devices, software or experiments which are of interest to the conference audience. Authors of accepted papers and extended abstracts are welcome to apply for demonstration space to support their presentation, whether by podium or poster; demonstrations associated with a poster presentation will be collocated with the poster, while other demonstrations will be given their own space at the conference. Demonstrations must be free of commercial content; companies wishing to showcase products should apply for exhibitor status.
Demonstrations are submitted via the Demonstration Submission Form, which requires a title, list of authors, image, 100-word abstract, and logistical details. Submissions will be reviewed by the Co-Chairs for Exhibits, Demonstrations, and Posters to ensure they are of interest to conference attendees and free from commercial content. The demonstration description will be published in the (non-archived) Symposium Digest distributed to conference attendees. Accepted demonstrations may be accompanied by a poster if a posterboard is requested at the time of submission.
Commercial Exhibits
Exhibits of products of relevance to the Symposium audience are welcomed. Application for exhibitor status is made through IEEE-VR; please specify your interest in exhibiting for the Haptics Symposium component of the full conference.
Formatting and Review Process
Both full papers and extended abstracts should be formatted using the IEEE Computer Society format.
The Haptics Symposium uses a single-blind review process for full papers and extended abstracts, meaning the reviewers remain anonymous to the authors but not vice versa. Submissions should therefore not be anonymized.
Novel Content Requirement
Both full papers and extended abstracts should describe new content that has not been previously published in archival form, nor presented at another haptics-focused conference. This is not intended as a bar to subsequent publication of this material.
